Reviewing AT&T's U-Verse offering

Alan Weinkrantz, head of Weinkrantz PR, has been reviewing AT&T's U-Verse offering since May over at his blog 3screens.net and this week he'll be taking a look at the service provider's HD offerings (photo [1]), remote control (photo [2]) and new Motorola set-top box (photo [3]). Alan takes an end user perspective on his blog, which results in a myriad of little critiques--few are crucial but the aggregate could result in an unhappy customer. The HD specific critiques have yet to come--except for a note that his favorite HD offering is HDNet--but other nitpicks are interesting. Here's a quick smattering of his comments:

• The Moto STB is much smaller than Scientific Atlanta's STB for TimeWarner
• Moto, unfortunately, failed to include a digital clock on the STB
• The remote control lights up for a full 8 seconds
• The remote features a telephone style numberpad for easy texting and maybe future IP phone functionality?
• Installing the HD set-top boxes was straightforward and took about two hours to complete, but that included installing the TimeWarner HD STB, because Alan compares the two services back-to-back.
