Verizon doesn't make a very good case for deal with cablecos
A Verizon (NYSE: VZ) FiOS-festooned van recently parked just outside the 104-home enclave where I live. Presumably, some techs were messing with the telco's equipment hidden in a little wooded area there. They were not, I know, doing anything about connecting FiOS from the fiber running down the nearby county road and into my fiber-rich, FiOS infrastructure-prepared community.
I know because I've asked. Repeatedly. The closest we'll get to Verizon's vaunted FTTH play is spotting a truck with bright FiOS advertising in the woods along Buckshutem Road.
That leaves our little community with some choices, but not nearly as many as some better heeled communities in South Jersey. We can get DirecTV (Nasdaq: DTV), Dish Network (Nasdaq: DISH) or Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA) TV.
Of course, sports fans who go satellite lose the Philadelphia sports franchises because Comcast won't share their broadcasts in the Philadelphia region. For broadband we have Comcast or Verizon DSL. That's right, DSL. Read More.

U-verse drives AT&T wireline business
U-verse revenues were up 38 percent year-over-year and 10.2 percent versus the previous quarter and total subscribership reached 6.8 million, according to AT&T's (NYSE: T) second-quarter 2012 financial results released today.
"U-verse continues to drive a transformation in wireline consumer, reflected by the fact that consumer broadband, video and voice-over-IP revenues now represent 57 percent of wireline consumer revenues, up from 50 percent in the year-earlier quarter," the carrier said in its earnings announcement.
As usual, fewer new subscribers subscribed to TV (155,000) than high-speed Internet (553,000) during the quarter. Those additions were the direct result of more subscribers abandoning slower DSL for U-verse speeds.
Speed, of course, leads the way when it comes to broadband. The carrier said that more than 50 percent of its U-verse subscribers have bought into plans that deliver broadband speeds of 12 Mbps or higher. A year ago this number sat at 39 percent of all subscribers.
The bundle, too, continued to be the glue that holds everything together as "subscribers on triple- or quad-play options drove 18.2 percent year-over-year growth in IP revenues from residential customers (broadband, U-verse TV and U-verse Voice) and 6.2 percent sequential growth, the carrier said. About 90 percent of new U-verse TV customers also subscribed to HSI and about half took voice, AT&T said, and about three quarters of all U-verse subscribers are in triple or double play bundles.
U-verse ARPU climbed slightly to $170. Service penetration is about 17.3 percent of eligible living units.
Keeping things in perspective, AT&T still leaned heavily on its wireless business and still more loudly crowed about results there as it posted consolidated revenues of $31.6 billion that were 0.2 percent higher year-over-year.

Buckeye takes TV Everywhere with Azuki
Buckeye CableSystem is leaning on Azuki Systems to provide the technology it needs to drive its video-on-demand (VoD) and linear programming lineups onto multiple screens--both inside and outside the residence--as it becomes part of the TV Everywhere movement.
The Buckeye plan is to extend video to Android tablets and smartphones, Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPhone and iPad, IPTV set-top boxes and gaming consoles via the Azuki Media Platform. Source content includes programming from the Buckeye CableSystem Sports Network (BCSN)--a localized favorite. The package will also include a custom user interface with social interactivity, enhanced content discovery and touch-screen remote controls along with online bill-paying capabilities.
"Azuki delivers game-changing innovation that can help us delver on the promise of TV Everywhere with its unique ability to manage and optimize OTT video delivery to multi-screens without impacting our existing video operations," Joe Jensen, CTO of the Toledo-based MVPD, said in a news release.
Azuki, for its part, promised to help Buckeye "quickly and easily expand their existing video services to multiple screens," according to the company's president-CEO, John Clancy, quoted in the same news release.
This technology will include normalized media preparation, adaptive streaming and digital rights management; enforcement of multi-screen content viewing rights within the home and on-the-go "when allowed" via Azuki's Entitlement Specification; and extended advertising campaigns showing on new screens by using Azuki's Right Time Ad Insertion.
The total package, he concluded, will "enable Buckeye CableSystem to extend its leadership position in the industry by providing an unmatched level of video delivery and quality across VoD and linear programming."

TriCounty Telecom uses Enton for 'hybrid TV' service
TriCounty Telecom's IPTV subscribers in Eastern North Carolina soon have access to a hybrid-TV service that combines broadcast-TV and OTT and cloud-based services.
TriCounty is using Entone's FusionTV software to add the additional multimedia layers to its traditional-TV package as it expands its FTTH network in "several communities" in its serving area.
"Our communities rely on us to provide them with the best-in-class services (and) we need a solution that will allow us to cost-effectively deliver the best of linear TV and OTT services across our entire network," TriCounty Telecom CEO and General Manager Greg Coltrain said in a statement.
That solution is being provided by Entone, which is delivering its FusionTV product to power hybrid-TV delivery throughout several communities in the TriCounty footprint.
Fusion TV, Coltrain added, "offers a richer and more compelling service than any other standalone OTT solution" and that will allow TriCounty to "meet our subscribers' growing appetite for OTT services while adding advanced cloud-based applications that further enhances our IPTV service."
FusionTV integrates with IPTV middleware and digital rights management (DRM) systems and allows TriCounty to update its Entone Hybrid TV set-top boxes via a software download.
The OTT element is part of an ongoing relationship between TriCounty and Entone that has "yielded encouraging results for all parties involved," Entone CEO Steve McKay said in the news release. "The differentiated user experience of FusionTV provides the timeliness of traditional live broadcast television with the voice and flexibility of OTT services. It's a superior user experience for the consumer that creates a more enduring relationship with the service provider."

FiOS carries Verizon to higher wireline consumer revenues; Sub growth slows
Verizon's (NYSE: VZ) 2.5 percent year-over-year second-quarter wireline consumer revenue increase--"the highest in several years," as the carrier said in its official earnings release--came mainly thanks to a still-growing FiOS business.
Sixty-five percent of wireline revenues were generated by FiOS, which grew its revenue base, from $2.027 million in the second quarter of 2011, to $2.380 in 2012.
The flip side of the coin is that FiOS' momentum is showing signs of slowing. The service provider added only 120,000 FiOS video subs this quarter, compared to 184,000 for the same period a year ago and less than what some analysts had predicted even during a traditionally slow quarter for subscriber growth.
While that brought the total number of video subs to 4.5 million, Barclays Capital analyst James Ratcliffe had predicted the service provider would add 150,000 FiOS TV subs, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Still, the flagging wireline business seems to have been re-booted by FiOS. Although second quarter operating revenues declined 3.1 percent year-over-year, to $9.9 billion, customer revenues were up 2.5 percent and consumer ARPU for wireline services hit $100 for the first time—reaching $100.26—which was an 8.5 percent improvement over 2011.
FiOS did even better with ARPU hitting more than $149 in the quarter and FiOS services producing 65 percent of consumer wireline revenues, the company said.
"Approximately 70 percent of FiOS consumer customers have purchased a 'triple play' of phone, Internet and TV services," the carrier said in its earnings announcement.
FiOS penetration increased from 33.9 to 36.6 percent and FiOS video penetration grew to 32.6 percent, from 29.9 percent. Verizon said it had 8.8 million broadband connections at the end of the second quarter--up 2.6 percent year-over-year--and that the FiOS network now passes more than 17 million premises.
The lower FiOS numbers could also have an impact on other Verizon business--the purchase of wireless spectrum from a consortium of cable operators known as SpectrumCo--which includes Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA), Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC) and Bright House Networks--and standalone Cox Communications and especially a proposed joint marketing agreement between those entities.
Federal regulators and others have been looking at how a close working relationship between Verizon Wireless selling cable services and cable operators selling Verizon Wireless would impact FiOS and its ongoing purpose of providing a competitive alternative to cable.

San Francisco judge clears way for AT&T U-verse utility boxes
In a case that seems to have lasted only slightly less time than a presidential election campaign, San Francisco Superior Court Judge Teri Jackson might have finally cleared the way for AT&T (NYSE: T) to install up to 726 U-verse utility boxes on the city's sidewalks. Then again, the good judge might have just cleared the way for those opposed to the installation to appeal the ruling.
A coalition of citizens groups--including San Francisco Beautiful, San Francisco Tomorrow, Dogpatch Neighborhood Association, Potrero Boosters Neighborhood Association and the Duboce Triangle Neighborhood Association--had taken the matter to court last August, challenging the city's approval of the planned installations.
And, while AT&T spokesman Lane Kasselman was crowing about being "pleased with the decision by the San Francisco Superior Court affirming the decision by the Board of Supervisors to support AT&T's investment in our community, Milo Hanke, a spokesman for San Francisco Beautiful indicated that the decision was hardly a fait accompli and that an appeal was likely.
"The precedent for this is really scary," Hanke told the San Francisco Business Times. "This opens up our sidewalks. It's a bonanza for private utilities."
Only a bare majority of the Board of Supervisors apparently felt the box installations were a good deal a year ago when they agreed, 6-5, to uphold a city staff determination exempting AT&T from having to do an environmental impact report. Without the ruling, the boxes would have been installed so the neighborhood activists put the decision in the court's hands.
Judge Jackson's ruling found that the city correctly determined that the boxes--four feet across, just over four feet tall and approximately two feet deep sitting on concrete pedestals flanked by metal bollards--were example because they could be considered "small new equipment and facilities in small structures."
It's been a long struggle for AT&T and U-verse in the City by the Bay. The service was first proposed in 2007 which would have made San Francisco one of the first cities in California to get the IPTV service. The city said OK but backed away in 2008 when neighborhood activists objected. Since then, San Francisco has gone from being one of the first U-verse cities in the state to the last major city without U-verse.

Videos tell the story behind U-verse bills
A service that breaks down complex AT&T U-verse bill details and turns them into personalized videos is so popular among subscribers that the carrier will next introduce it for its wireless subscribers. The service, put together by SundaySky and delivered to new customers and those who have changed their service, has been in operation since April. That's all the time it took for the carrier to decide "wireless is obviously the very next play that we're looking at establishing with smart video," Deno Harrison, director of digital experience marketing at AT&T, told FierceIPTV.
