The pay TV cord-cutting threat remains mild for now, but the rise of Web-connected consumer electronics devices, including TVs, suggests that pay TV operators should embrace online video sooner rather than later, according to survey results from ABI Research.

The firm surveyed 2,000 consumers, and only 10 percent of them did not subscribe to some kind of pay TV service package. Meanwhile, consumers with connected CE devices are streaming between seven and eight hours of TV content per week to those devices, a figure that should give cable TV and IPTV service providers alike something to think about.

At the same time, only 11 percent of those surveyed currently have connected TVs, and market for content distribution to such devices continues to be fragmented, but that highlights the potential for pay TV service providers to play a strong hand in a still-developing market.
