Analyst says DTV boosted pay TV subs

Tools

The digital TV transition has helped cable TV, satellite TV and telco TV service providers to add about 653,000 subscribers, according to Wells Fargo Securities broadcasting and cable analyst Marci Ryvicker. The number includes subscribers picked up during the first quarter, when the transition was expected to occur but did not, and the second quarter, when it actually did occur on June 12. The figure also includes expected additions to be reported during the third quarter.

DTV is expected to benefit cable TV companies the most, though Ryvicker expects telcos to gain in the neighborhood of 41,000 subscribers in direct connection to the transition.

wouldn't that mean that with more people turning to paid TV to watch their local channels because of the DTV switch that they will be less likely to watch those local channels given the fact that those paid services will give them more channels to watch?with so many cable and satellite channels available why should anyone with those service waste their time watching only local channels?this DTV switch may lead to lower local TV rattings.
