Apple finally upgrades TV software

Tools

Apple has finally announced Version 3.0 of its Apple TV software, a move that many company watchers expected to occur months ago. That wait has added to the impression that TV applications are not high on Apple's list of priorities, an impression given life by Apple itself when it proclaimed last year that TV was just a "hobby" for the iPhone/iPod progenitor.

The new version of Apple TV incorporates a new menu, as well as iTunes Extras and iTunes LP content features and Web radio access. CNET News notes that the new additions may not live up to expectations generated by the many months without a software update or official news of new features.

Apple may still be dabbling with TV, but many other companies have jumped into the fold during the last year and a half to provide both service providers and consumers with new TV gadget and software alternatives.
