BSkyB says Canvas needs further review

The Project Canvas joint venture between the BBC, U.K. telco BT and ITV is generating more controversy, not long after U.K. regulator Ofcom became concerned that the "catch-up" TV offering could negatively affect competition among U.K. TV services as they evolve to video-on-demand offerings that include Internet-based content. Now, satellite TV player BSkyB is saying that the PC-to-TV Canvas offering led by BBC needs to be further reviewed by Ofcom, because details of the service and its market effects are unclear.

At the heart of the matter is the ability of a content firm, BBC, to have a hand in developing what could become its own Internet-based distribution medium.
