Cisco Systems has unveiled new research suggesting that total IP network traffic is expected to reach half a zettabyte--or more than 500 exabytes (one zettabyte equaling 1,000 exabytes) by 2012. The telecom industry has been called on before to prepare for the coming exaflood of exabytes driven by increasing video traffic, but now, more outlets are beginning to forecast a zetaflood of zettabytes, so be forewarned.

Cisco's Visual Networking Index predicts IP traffic to increase from 6.6 million exabytes per month in 2007 to 44 exabytes per month--or an annual run rate of 522 exabytes per year--in 2012.
