ESPN plans 3D broadcast of NCAA football, BCS National Championship game

Sports programming is continuing to be a driving force behind 3D content offerings with ESPN announcing it plans to broadcast more than a dozen college football games on its new ESPN 3D starting in September.

The stereoscopic efforts, sponsored by Sony, will include games between Boise State and Virgina Tech on Sept. 6 (thankfully, NOT on Boise State's bright blue Field Turf), Ohio State will face Miami on Sept. 11, and Clemson visits Auburn on Sept. 18.

ESPN said it also will broadcast the BCS National Championship game in 3D.

Sports programming has made up the bulk of content being offered in 3D by networks with college basketball, golf and tennis playing major roles. Critics say the technology will be hamstrung unless more content is offered in 3D.
