Firecomms gets funds from Swisscom, others

We haven't heard much in the past six months about plastic optical fiber, but Swisscom, the biggest network operator champion of this networking technology, last week took part in a $5 million round of funding for POF maker Firecomms. That's not a huge pile of money, and a handful of other firms also participated, but it illustrates the telco's ongoing interest in the technology. The home networking sector has become increasingly competitive in the last year as proponents of numerous solutions-HomePNA, MoCA, Wi-Fi, HomePlug and other powerline concepts--have sought to strengthen their footholds in various markets and regions of the world. The ITU's progressing G.hn standard is driving companies behind these technologies to further scramble to prove their case, and it will be interesting to see if POF really fits in and where.
