Harmonic holds tight, profit edges up

Harmonic, a vendor of encoding and transcoding technology for cable TV and IPTV networks, reported positive news in its third quarter earnings report, posting net income of $12 million, up from $9.4 million in the same quarter last year. Revenue came in at $91.5 million. Cable TV firms accounted for 63 percent, telcos accounted for 15 percent, and satellite firms brought in the rest of the total.

The vendor did cast a wary eye toward next year, and there remains the potential for some TV network operators to tighten their capital spending in 2009. But that caution should be buoyed if cable TV companies and telcos continue to report strong third quarter earnings. Transcoding opportunities certainly are likely to increase in the next year, and TV service providers look to incorporate online video content in their offerings, and deliver video to more types of end user devices.
