HomePlug advances at IEEE

Tools

Just a week after the ITU announced progress toward a common home networking standard, the HomePlug Powerline Alliance said its AV Plus specification will be used by the IEEE P1901 Working Group as the baseline for an IEEE powerline communications standard, according to a Telephony report.

The move is the result of a vote that took place last week in Kyoto, Japan. HomePlug's technology has primarily been deployed outside of the U.S. where there is not as much existing coaxial cable or other wiring options, but the IEEE acceptance likely will help broaden the technology's appeal. HomePlug also is aligned with wireless in-home technology ZigBee for utility control.
