ABI: IP STB outlook brightens

Within the last year, ABI Research and Screen Digest both have put out market studies projecting global growth in the set-top box market up until a 2012 peak, after which STB shipments could decline. Those reports have been often referenced (at least by us) as technology innovations have begun to hint at traditional STB functions being integrated with TV sets or in software that may reside in a different kind of device.

Now, however, ABI is returning with a new study that suggests that at least the market for IP STBs could stay strong a little longer, generating more than $3 billion globally by 2014. The digital TV transition may be boosting the market for STBs, while the boxes also continue to hold an important position for entertainment access in the home. Meanwhile, the demand for non-IP basic STBs still looks to be declining during the coming years.
