Latin America holds IPTV promise

As IPTV growth moderates elsewhere in the world, Latin America remains a growing opportunity for service providers in the region and for technology vendors who are facing pressure to diversify into new geographic markets as they fight slumping carrier spending. Conditional access provider Veramatrix told Telephony it expects to see many requests for proposals in the region this year, and as many as six to eight deployments along the line of hybrid IPTV over-the-top video offerings.

Also, vendor giants Microsoft and Alcatel-Lucent just last week signed on Codetel of the Dominican Republic as a new service provider customer. Still, companies need to step carefully as they move into Latin America, due to varying regulatory policies and economic challenges that may be more native to each country than to the broad effects of the shaky worldwide economy.
