MIPS moves toward Android STBs

The big news of the week regarding the Android operating system is inarguably Google's announcement of its Nexus One phone at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. However, elsewhere at the show, the advanced TV services community will find Android news of their own: MIPS Technologies is announcing a plan to use Android in its future set-top boxes and related products.

The potential for Android-based STBs, DVRs and other TV-related devices has been discussed since Android's earliest days as a mobile device platform, but the MIPS move is still notable as one of the first commitments to develop Android STBs. Meanwhile, it also represents Google's latest move in an advanced TV sector in which it has dabbled since at least 2006, when the Internet giant hired IPTV expert Vincent Dureau.
