Modem shortages lead to delays in Milwaukee U-verse installs

Post-Christmas demand for AT&T (NYSE: T)'s U-verse service has created a shortage of Motorola modems, creating installation delays for customers in the Milwaukee, Wis. Area, according to news reports. AT&T said U-verse modems were on back order from Motorola, meaning delays of up to several weeks for some households.

"It's a huge back order that happened," an AT&T customer service representative told the Milwaukee-Wisconsin Journal Sentinel. But AT&T spokesman Jim Greer said the actual number of customers affected nationwide was relatively small, adding that supplies have caught up with demand in Milwaukee. "There should not be more delays," he said.

AT&T in September announced plans to hire more than 100 additional U-verse technicians in Wisconsin to help meet demands for installation. But, the company said, some of those jobs likely will disappear as the demand slows as the market becomes more saturated. AT&T offers the IPTV service in some 140 communities in the state.
