More home networking solutions arrive

Technology to provide home networking connectivity over power lines may have been overlooked somewhat as companies have rushed to support Multimedia over Coax, HomePNA and wireless solutions. However, power lines running through the home remain viable home network conduits, and the HomePlug standard and other solutions are for all kinds of TV and broadband companies, not just utilities.

At the recent NXTcomm trade show in Las Vegas, Comtrend was promoting its PowerGrid902, and Ethernet adapter that plugs into a home outlet and connects to an IPTV set-top box via an Ethernet cable. BT and and Telefonica are among the IPTV service providers that have used Comtrend's device, and the company is now looking to move in on the U.S. market.

Meanwhile, another home networking vendor, Actiontec, recently announced an in-home automation controller that sets up PCs or mobile phones to control home network functions.
