Motorola sells 2 millionth IP set-top
Motorola said it has shipped 2 million IPTV set-top boxes just five months after hitting the milestone of 1 million. The 2 million-mark was reached as part of an order for 150,000 VIP1510s placed by Telia Sonera, the Swedish IPTV provider. Telia Sonera reported having 100,000 IPTV subs as of May this year.
The Schaumberg, Ill., comms giant released the set-top news at IBC in Amsterdam, Europe's biggest trade show for the television broadcast industry. This year, IBC opened up Hall 12 specifically for IPTV, video-on-demand and broadband video vendors, of which nearly 50 have exhibits.
Europe is thought to be ahead of the United States in IPTV rollouts, and in terms of subscribers, that may be true. The largest provider stateside, U-verse, just made it to the same milestone as Telia Sonera did in May. Verizon's FiOS TV passed 500,000, but the service isn't pure-play IPTV.
In terms of rollouts, the United States may very well be ahead of Europe. Screen Digest, the London media research firm, said more than 60 IPTV operations were in play across Europe at the end of the second quarter. Officials at National Telecommunications Cooperative Association estimate that around 100 small U.S. telcos have either launched or are in the process of rolling out IPTV.
