OpenIPTV Forum completes interop test

The Open IPTV Forum (OIPF) last week successfully completed its first interoperability event, which was designed to target  interoperability testing between consumer terminal equipment and IPTV middleware and gateway products in an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) environment. The end user gear used in the test was supplied by Motorola and Sharp, the middleware by Ericsson and the gateway platform by Fraunhofer FOKUS.

Several OIPF members were in attendance, including at least four carriers--Fastweb, France Telecom Orange, Telefonica and Telecom Italia--the OIPF said.

Diego Gibellino of Telecom Italia said in an OIPF press release, "From a telecom operator perspective, it is quite significant that the forum has been able to gather companies around early implementations just after the completion of the OIPF Release 1 specifications. The availability of equipments and devices and their capability to interoperate in a multi-vendor environment are the fundamental value that the specifications can bring to the market."

The OIPF said it is likely to pursue more interop tests during 2010.

There is a reason there was only 2 vendors participating(if you don't count end user gear which plays no meaningful role beyond display). The interop proved nothing at all. This was only one VERY small portion of what actually needs to be covered by OIPTVF. Has anyone wondered why there are different profiles now proposed by the forum? The above is only one small part of one profile. It is these types of publicity stunts that ruin the credibility of the forum. Everyone who knows anything about IPTV knows this is a joke!
