Opera Software backs HbbTV

Tools

Opera Software, which is primarily known for its mobile browser exploits, is looking to apply its software prowess to the hybrid TV world. The Norway-based firm is the latest company to join the Hybrid Broadcast Broadband TV (HbbTV) initiative, which is trying to create a standard environment for support of both broadcast and broadband delivery of news, information and entertainment to the end consumer through set-top boxes and connected TVs.

The Opera Devices SDK is the basis for the Opera for Connected TVs platform. The HbbTV initiative counts several broadcasters as members, as well as IPTV vendors like ANT and OpenTV. The group's work also leverages existing standards from the Open IPTV Forum and other groups.
