Report: Intel's Viiv still not selling well

Tools

At the CES show earlier this year, Intel predicted the rise of the entertainment PC, with its Viiv technology powering a PC at the epicenter of the digital livingroom. Well, it's time for holiday shopping and no one is talking about Viivs. Intel and its PC partners are selling a bunch of Viiv-equipped PCs, but it doesn't look like the Viiv-factor is really coming into play. According to a report from News.com Intel insiders admit that Viiv has fallen short of expectations, despite the fact that content deals are just now beginning to roll in: like the recent one with NBC. So is this the end of the entertainment PC vision, the slow demise of Viiv or just a signal of slower market uptake than the bullish Intel expected?

I often see Viiv compared to Centrino but with Centrino all consumers have to do is turn on the computer to enjoy the benefits (as WiFi was already ubiquitous). In the case of Viiv, it just hasn't been marketed in a way that made it just as easy. Why not just package a Viiv PC with a large screen TV and free movie/game downloads for consumers to quickly "get it." We are asking consumers to make the literal (connect the Viiv PC to the TV) and figurative connection. That takes a lot longer.
