Reviewing AT&T's U-Verse offering

Tools

Alan Weinkrantz, head of Weinkrantz PR, has been reviewing AT&T's U-Verse offering since May over at his blog 3screens.net and this week he'll be taking a look at the service provider's HD offerings (photo), remote control (photo) and new Motorola set-top box (photo). Alan takes an end user perspective on his blog, which results in a myriad of little critiques--few are crucial but the aggregate could result in an unhappy customer. The HD specific critiques have yet to come--except for a note that his favorite HD offering is HDNet--but other nitpicks are interesting. Here's a quick smattering of his comments:

  • The Moto STB is much smaller than Scientific Atlanta's STB for TimeWarner
  • Moto, unfortunately, failed to include a digital clock on the STB
  • The remote control lights up for a full 8 seconds
  • The remote features a telephone style numberpad for easy texting and maybe future IP phone functionality?
  • Installing the HD set-top boxes was straightforward and took about two hours to complete, but that included installing the TimeWarner HD STB, because Alan compares the two services back-to-back.

Your conclusions about my not being a happy customer is not right. To clarify.... 1. I am not a "happy" or "unhappy" customer. I am trial user, trying out something new. 2. It's not prefect, but it does work as advertised. 3. I always liked TimeWarner, have had TimeWarner execs in my home to see U-verse, and they play a vital role in our local community in San Antonio. 4. I am saving money on AT&T because during the trial period, it's free. 5. HD working aside, if AT&T has done one thing right- it's to manage the customer's expectations during the trial period. They told what I would get, what I would lose, when new services were coming and in the event of a slight delay, they told me - and even sent me a coupon for some free ice cream! That is something no one writes about. Everyone is hung up on service, how do you shove all that video down the phone line, jitter, stock prices, competing with satellite, internal politics with Microsoft, Alcatel, the content providers, etc. Frankly, from the end user perspective, it really does not matter. I just want to be entertained, informed and to some degree, educated. I want it to work, be treated nicely, and have what appears to be price competetive offering. When the installation crew comes, I expect them to be nice, do a good job and check out everything to make sure it works before they leave. In that vein, AT&T has delivered. Thanks, Alan. I didn't mean to imply that you were unhappy with the service. Your site serves to educate AT&T and the industry about the finer details of the U-Verse service. These include both positive and negative comments. My point was the industry should ignore these finer details, because a sum total of negative nitpicks "may" result in an unhappy customer. In other words, the industry should read your blog. -Brian
Are STBs for ATT U-Verse available for purchase to avoid paying the monthly charge they hit you with for additionla TV sets?
