In what could provide a nice beachhead on the cable operator front, Mediaroom--which is the platform of choice for AT&T U-verse and Surewest--is rumored to be part of an IPTV trial that Time Warner Cable is tinkering with in Los Angeles.

The platform contains a wealth of improvements over most of cable's traditional offerings including multi-room DVR play, fast channel navigation with more information available to the user, and, most importantly, the ability to offer interactive services for consumers and on the advertising front.

When and how big TWC's trial is hasn't been disclosed, with more information likely to come out at next week's cable show in L.A.

If TWC decides Mediaroom is a gamer, it would be the first big win for Microsoft in the U.S. cable industry in quite awhile.
