Rumor mill: Netflix, Relativity Media have new-release movie deal

A rumored deal between Netflix and media and entertainment company Relativity Media, could give Netflix exclusive access to Relativity-controlled first run movies, similar to the access pay-TV programmers like HBO and Showtime have. The agreement with Relativity would give Netflix licensing rights to any of the programming for which Relativity is responsible for distributing.  The company has more than a dozen movies it will be responsible for distributing in the next year, including "The Fighter," "Catfish," and "My Soul to Take." It also has ties to Universal and Sony.

Netflix, which has more than 14 million subscribers to its by-mail DVD service in the United States, also streams movies instantly to some 7 million households. The deal would allow Netflix to stream movies according to the same release schedule as pay-TV outlets.
