SDI, Sony work on 3D subtitling solution

Dubbing and subtitling company SDI says Sony Creative Software is using its XML schema with its Z-Depth 3D subtitle editing application--which guides the placement of subtitles or menus in the 3D space of a 3D title presentation.

As more and more content is created in 3D--some 61 percent of U.S. moviegoers have seen 3D films and analysts expect more than 25 million 3D TV sets to ship globally by 2013--the industry is looking to establish standards across the supply chain.

Sony Creative Software looked to SDI to help develop software applications and provide recommendations for supported file formats. After researching the range of data being produced, SDI determined a robust schema needed to be created which allows for the subtitle placement work that has been done in the initial market segment to be repurposed for downstream use
