SK Broadband drives biggest IPTV-over-cable deployment

South Korea's SK Broadband reportedly has engaged in the largest deployment so far of an IPTV system that runs on a cable TV network but bypasses cable-modem termination systems. The service provider worked with vendor partner Harmonic on the DOCSIS 3.0-based service, first offered in Seoul and now being expanded.

In such a bypass approach, IPTV content is delivered via Harmonic's edge QAMs to set-top boxes and other devices without hitting the CMTS. IPTV-over-cable discussions have heated up in recent months, and South Korea appears to be a center of activity, with vendor BigBand Networks, another bypass proponent, working with SK Broadband competitor LG Powercom.
