Spanish alternative broadband provider Jazz Telecommunications says it's turning off its Jazztelia IPTV service, likely because the service, which launched in 2006, so far has attracted just 11,000 subscribers by the end of last year. Spanish telecom Telefonica, meanwhile, has more than 703,000 IPTV subs at the end of last year.

Jazztel says it isn't getting out of the business entirely, but that it instead will refocus its efforts, working to develop a new over-the-top delivery service instead, which it hopes will allow it to offer a larger content selection. Jazztelia will evolve from IPTV to OTT and offer online video content, share photos and access social networks. Jazztel will continue to support its IPTV service to subscribers for a limited time. It offered few additional specifics.

The company earlier said, "this decision will improve the company's operating figures and at the same time, strengthen its presence in the audiovisual market."

The operator is currently partnering with pay-TV operator Digital+ to offer a triple play.
