Telefonica registers 2.3 million pay TV subs worldwide

Tools

Spain's Telefónica largely benefited from TV service adoption outside of its native market, as the company posted first-quarter results that include a worldwide tally of about 2.3 million pay TV customers. The telco has TV customers in Spain, the Czech Republic, Peru, Chile, Colombia, Brazil and Venezuela. At the end of 2008, Telefonica had more than 600,000 customers in Spain for its Imagenio TV services, but did not provide a first-quarter update on the service.

However, it's clear that Telefonica units and affiliates in other countries are rapidly growing their TV bases, with Latin America pay TV users up a total of 74,500 during the last three months, and growth in the Czech Republic increasing by more than 13,000 users during the same period.
