(Updated 2:30 EDT, Oct. 26, with further information about market penetration)

Verizon Communications has issued its third quarter earnings results, which included FiOS TV subscriber additions of 191,000. That's a long way from the second quarter additions of about 300,000. That sequential nose-dive, along with AT&T's less-sharply declining subscriber additions reported last week, suggest mounting evidence that big U.S. telcos' TV service are coming to the end of their early generation growth spurts.

This year's third quarter figure also was about 42,000 fewer customers than the company added during the same quarter in 2008.

Verizon now has about 2.7 million FiOS TV customers, and despite the slowing of subscriber growth, market penetration and average revenue per user continued on upward tracks during the third quarter. The company said FiOS TV penetration grew about 5 percent year-over-year, and now stands at just under 25 percent, with availability to roughly 11 million premises. ARPU from broadband and video services grew about 12,6 percent from the third quarter last year to $75.04.
