Verizon inches toward IPTV

Verizon Communications has entertained the possibility of eventually migrating to IPTV throughout its expansion of its quadrature amplitude modulation-based (QAM) FiOS TV services, without ever seeming to embrace the idea. Using a cable TV-like QAM scheme is part of what helped Verizon get started early in telco TV services. It has been moving from analog QAM completely over to digital QAM, but Verizon CTO Mark Wegleitner recently told Telephony that Verizon also is migrating toward a scenario in which it offers broadcast channels over QAM and other "long-tail" types of video-on-demand content over IPTV. It's a hybrid approach the no other large telco appears to be pursuing.
