Todd Spangler at Multichannel News reports that Verizon Communications is planning to make its FiOS1 local news and weather channel available in the New York metro area as early as next Monday. Verizon has not verified that plan, however.

The telco already offers the FiOS1 channel in the Washington, D.C., area, where it debuted in March 2007. That launch marked the telco's first foray into operating its own TV channel, and its only foray thus far. In New York, Verizon's effort would run into established channels from the cable TV providers, including Time Warner Cable's NY1 and Cablevision's News 12. Cable TV providers have embraced the idea of having a hand in local-level information programming, while telco TV players, for the most part, have put such thoughts on the back burner while they continue to get acclimated to the TV service sector.
