Verizon set to invade Washington, D.C.

Verizon Communications has recently seen its efforts to offer TV service in Philadelphia delayed by that city's government, but the Washington, D.C., city council just gave the telco better news: It officially approved a 15-year cable franchise that Verizon negotiated with the city's cable TV franchise authority last month. The deal now goes to the mayor's office for its final stamp.

The telco plans to begin offering FiOS TV in competition with Comcast in the city next year, and previously has agreed to provide District-wide coverage within 10 years. The terms of the approved deal call for complete availability over the next nine years.
