As expected after Verizon Communications' recent launch of Facebook and Twitter FiOS TV widgets last month, the telco is set to open its Widget Bazaar Applications Marketplace to third-party application developers. Verizon has prepared a software development kit for the app innovators, and the telco likely is hoping to capture at least a small amount of the developer energy that has coalesced around the Apple iPhone.

Good luck with that--telco TV hasn't exactly engendered the mad dash that the most popular mobile gadgets have. Still, you have to credit the telcos a bit with finally embracing a segment of the communications ecosystem that they have ignored for too long. Early reports indicate that developers will be able to keep 70 percent of the revenue from FiOS widget applications they develop.
