NXP Semiconductors last week announced it is acquiring the broadband media business of Conexant Systems for about $110 million, a deal value which could rise of the business unit meets certain performance thresholds in the months to come. The deal is significant to NXP's ability to compete against semiconductor players Broadcom and STMicroelectronics, the company told EETimes. The Conxant unit, like NXP, has expertise in the area of IPTV. The Conexant unit also brings technology related to DOCSIS 3.0, Multimedla over Coax Alliance and Secure Video Processor standards. The Conexant group collected about $205 million in revenue in 2007.

Report: DOCSIS 3.0 vs. IPTV

Key findings from the recent report from Light Reading include:

Verizon's FiOS service promises much more shared bandwidth and faster data speeds than Docsis 3.0

Cable operators likely won't introduce Docsis 3.0 systems and gear en masse until 2008 or 2009

Docsis 3.0's deployment, connection, equipment and service expenses will be much lower than FiOS's

Verizon's FTTP plant will cost less to operate and maintain than cable plant

As we've reported in the past DOCSIS 3.0 claims downstream data rates of 160 Mbps or higher and upstream data rates of 120 Mbps or higher over coax.

For more on DOCSIS 3.0 vs. IPTV:
- see this release from Light Reading

DOCSIS 3.0 enables 160 Mbps down, 120 up

Everything you can do, I can do better: CableLabs, the research arm of the cable industry, officially issued Data-Over-Cable Service Interface Specifications (DOCSIS) 3.0, which claims downstream data rates of 160 Mbps or higher and upstream data rates of 120 Mbps or higher over coaxial. The spec achieves these speeds by using channel bonding for both the upstream and downstream directions. Of course, DOCSIS 3.0 also integrates support for IPv6. Some vendors got to review the spec under NDA earlier this year and last month CableLabs hosted a week long interoperability event to bring together the vendors to develop DOCSIS 3.0 products. The interop event included ARRIS, BigBand Networks, Broadcom, Casa Systems, Conexant Systems, Filtronic Signal Solutions, NETGEAR, Scientific Atlanta a Cisco company, Cisco Linksys, and Cisco Systems.
