China Telecom has chosen its system platform and set-top box manufacturers for IPTV expansions and upgrades by its provincial operating branches. The system platform vendors include ZTE, UTStarcom and Alcatel-Lucent. China Telecom also had envisioned a need for more than 530,000 standard-definition set-top boxes, and its vendors for those now include ZTE, UTStarcom, Coship, Motorola, Huawei, Postcom, Sunniwell, Alcatel-Lucent, Yuxing, 30 Kaitian and Changhong. Suppliers for about 38,000 high-definition set-top boxes include ZTE, UTStarcom, Alcatel-Lucent, Postcom and Changhong.

All of the suppliers are potential vendors from which the provincial branches can make their actual deployment choices. Those provincial units are not allowed to further negotiate pricing. China Telecom has around 1 million IPTV customers, and said a few months ago that it was looking arrange orders for as many as 574,000 set-top boxes.

Synergy sees IPTV gear spending up 47%

Synergy Research Group reported that sales of IPTV equipment worldwide rose about 47% during 2007. SRG said that Cisco Systems was the chief beneficiary of that spending, receiving about 59% of all IPTV-related carrier capital spending globally. Alcatel-Lucent received about 13% and Motorola about 11%. With carriers like Verizon Communications, AT&T, TeliaSonera and others still adding hundreds of thousands of new IPTV subscribers every quarter, market confidence is increasing and carriers continue to buy more gear to continue rapid expansion.

DISH may have handheld video on its plate

Satellite TV provider DISH Networks spent about $700 million to win 168 spectrum licenses in the Federal Communications Commission 700 Mhz spectrum auction, and thus far it has been unclear how DISH would use the spectrum. However, some advances coming to light in the area of digital video broadcast for satellite service to handheld equipment (DVB-SH) could provide a hint. Alcatel-Lucent will be testing new DVB-SH gear in DISH's lab in Atlanta this spring and summer.

DVB-SH is related to the DVB-H standard that has found support internationally for mobile TV.

Amino has become the first British company to join the Open IPTV forum. The Open IPTV Forum seeks to create specifications and guidelines for IPTV and promotes them as an open standard for vendors to secure interoperability between services and devices. Companies which have recently joined the forum include Alcatel-Lucent, Deutsche Telekom, Huawei, ZTE Corporation, Telefonica, LG Electronics, TeliaSonera, Tilgin and Verimatrix. Amino is a major manufacturer of set top boxes, shipping 600,000 boxes last year to Russia, Europe and North America and having Amino join the forum is a fillip to the organization.
Cisco the king of vendors

Cisco has pipped arch rivals Juniper Networks and Alcatel-Lucent for the prized AT&T super router contract to deal with the surging demand for video and other rich media applications. The deal is estimated by analysts to be worth in excess of $500 million over several years.

Cisco announced AT&T had selected its CRS-1 router to upgrade the telco's global IP backbone. The super routers are more than seven feet high and manage huge volumes of traffic at network junction points and are part of AT&T's announced upgrade to 40gbs for its core network.

The win cements Cisco's position as the leading IP vendor in the U.S. market and also confirms the troubles Alcatel-Lucent is having post merger to build market growth following the consolidation of the U.S. telco majors.

Cisco has also ridden the boom in internet telephony, with Comcast and Time Warner both using Cisco gateway boxes to support the sharp increase in digital voice products. Despite its IP strength Cisco stock has struggled as the market has downgraded companies with exposure to the troubled telco sector

Two big international deployments come as the year closes, with Brazil Telecom and Italy's Wind launching their IPTV networks.

Brasil Telecom's Videon IPTV has used UTStarcom to provide the end to end solution, giving the California based company its first major Latin America contract. The video on demand service has been launched in Brasilia with plans to expand the service to additional cities in the country's South and Midwest regions in the coming months.

Wind's service has a subscriber base of 2 million and has opted for a solution developed by Alcatel-Lucent using Microsoft's Mediaroom. Alcatel-Lucent's IPTV service includes an IP/MPLS network infrastructure based on its 7750 service router.
