Inlet Technologies - The company's Armada transcoding process has helped it win deals such as this month's agreement with Broadway Video Digital Media to support TV shows for iTunes.

Motorola - Motorola made a string of acquisitions related to video technologies used in broadband and IPTV network environments, including Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Modulus, supplier of video encoding/transcoding technology.

RipCode - Ripcode makes a video transcoding appliance focused on video-on-demand applications, also with some emphasis on mobile-related activities.

Hotwire to send IPTV over Motorola FTTH

Hotwire Communications, a Wynnewood, Penn.-based service provider, is using Motorola's gigabit passive optical networking fiber to the home (FTTH) solution, MPEG-4 high-definition encoder and IP set-top box offerings to support IPTV and other services.

Hotwire, which focuses on delivering fiber-based broadband to multi-family communities and home developments, student dormitories and military housing, serves customers in parts of Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York.

NAB: Will online TV movement hurt IPTV?

The National Association of Broadcasters trade show last week in Las Vegas appeared from some press coverage to be more of a telco IPTV meet-up. While there was plenty of positive chatter, there was also some caution. One bit of caution had to do with the growing trend of TV programming moving online--and being viewed online during prime TV viewing hours. Online video aggregation company Veoh Networks said it is seeing that trend, but even a firm from the telecom world, Motorola, noted the increasing impact that online video viewing could have on telcos' IPTV hopes. Of particular threat is the increasing amount of free TV content online from TV broadcasters themselves.

FiOS runs out of televisions

Verizon's high-profile campaign to sign up FiOS subs by offering a free 19-inch Sharp HD television has become an embarrassment after Verizon had to admit the televisions would take up to 15 weeks to arrive. The nearly four-month delay prompted Verizon to write to FiOS subscribers offering them an alternative Magnates TV or a $200 Best Buy gift card. It has also withdrawn the offer.

Verizon said the delay was because Sharp has not been able to meet the demand. Verizon added 226,000 new IPTV subscribers in the final quarter in 2007 and expected to maintain that rate into 2008. Verizon also faced a delay in HDTV set-top boxes, which it said was also a supply problem with its vendor Motorola. The shortage came after a spike in orders during the holiday season saw subscriber numbers soar over a million, making the IPTV service the 10th biggest provider of television in the country.
