Spotlight: Sezmi uses Amino's AssetHouse

Back in June Amino Technologies acquired Assethouse, the content management engine developer that once was part of BT, but we haven't heard much about the deal since. Likewise, video wholesaler Building B changed its name to Sezmi earlier this year, and we hadn't heard much about the company since it made a splash at NAB in April. But wonder no more about what's going on with either firm. Sezmi is using Amino's Assethouse technology as the basis for its "TV 2.0" service, according to IPTV News. Sezmi actually is the first U.S. company to use the Assethouse technology.

BT rolls on with FTTH project, upgrades Home Hub

BT, which had been testing a fiber-to-the-home architecture in the U.K. community of Ebbsfleet earlier this year, said it is committing to a broader FTTH network roll-out with an investment of around $3 billion. The company mentioned IPTV and high-definition TV as being among the reasons for making the investment. While some regions of the world, such as France, have seen carriers be aggressive early on with fiber projects, U.K. broadband deployments have been characterized more by technologies like ADSL2+. BT said the fiber push will reach 10 million homes by 2012, but some observers already are saying that the spending commitment by BT indicates a cautious and limited roll-out plan.

In other IPTV-related news at BT, the carrier has introduced a new wireless router for its Home Hub connected home service. The router is based on the 802.11n WiFi specification, and it greatly improves coverage range, security and other aspects of the telco's Home Hub service.

Amino acquires BT baby Assethouse

U.K. vendor Amino Technologies is acquiring fellow Brit firm Assethouse Technologies, the on-demand content management and delivery company that sprang forth from BT's Colchester video-on-demand trial during the late 1990s. The company had been owned by BT and LMS Capital, and Amino will pay just over $2.7 million in cash for it.

But, here's the kicker: Amino also is hiring Andrew Burke, the former BT executive behind the telco's BT Vision IPTV service, as its new CEO. Burke was CEO of BT Entertainment from 2004 to 2006, and actually left the company before BT launched the IPTV service whose development he led. At the time, it was believed Burke and others at BT were in a spat over the future role BT would play in the TV business.

The acquisition by set-top box company Amino of an on-demand content engine could help Amino help service providers make sense of the dizzying array of video content now available.

For more:
- see this report at IPTV News
