More home networking solutions arrive

Technology to provide home networking connectivity over power lines may have been overlooked somewhat as companies have rushed to support Multimedia over Coax, HomePNA and wireless solutions. However, power lines running through the home remain viable home network conduits, and the HomePlug standard and other solutions are for all kinds of TV and broadband companies, not just utilities.

At the recent NXTcomm trade show in Las Vegas, Comtrend was promoting its PowerGrid902, and Ethernet adapter that plugs into a home outlet and connects to an IPTV set-top box via an Ethernet cable. BT and and Telefonica are among the IPTV service providers that have used Comtrend's device, and the company is now looking to move in on the U.S. market.

Meanwhile, another home networking vendor, Actiontec, recently announced an in-home automation controller that sets up PCs or mobile phones to control home network functions.

Ericsson rolls with 10 Gigabit GPON system

Ericsson is looking to provide new muscle to IPTV deployments with the announcement at NXTcomm in Las Vegas from the vendor of a 10 Gigabit passive optical networking system. There has been some speculation recently that GPON systems could migrate directly to WDM-PON, but 10 Gigabit PON could likely keep carriers on GPON a bit longer, as they gain more bandwidth for more IPTV-related offerings.

IPTV broadcaster Backspace Communications is planning top introduce a mobile TV offering at this week's NXTcomm trade show in Las Vegas. The company, which was formed from the merger of an ISP and a traditional TV station, has thus far focused on the IPTV market.

The real battle for the living room

Telcos and cable TV providers are tussling over who will own the TV/video pipeline into consumer living rooms, and it is fun to watch them one-up one another as they pile on the HDTV channels and make promises about what is to come next. But, the real battle for the living room is about to happen on the software front.

Microsoft recently announced the beta version of its Mediaroom Presentation Framework, with all kinds of new goodies for IPTV service providers. However, the Soft At Home consortium led by France Telecom also is looking to work its way into consumer living rooms possibly to challenge Microsoft, and how video content is organized, presented and managed for IPTV services.

Soft At Home was announced a few months ago, but there has not been much detail since (The group's website consists of about three pages).

Next week at NXTcomm, I will be meeting with executives from both Soft At Home and Microsoft Mediaroom (not simultaneously, though that might be fun). Look to FierceIPTV next week for more detailed reports on their distinct approaches, as well as other show news.
