DISH may have handheld video on its plate

Satellite TV provider DISH Networks spent about $700 million to win 168 spectrum licenses in the Federal Communications Commission 700 Mhz spectrum auction, and thus far it has been unclear how DISH would use the spectrum. However, some advances coming to light in the area of digital video broadcast for satellite service to handheld equipment (DVB-SH) could provide a hint. Alcatel-Lucent will be testing new DVB-SH gear in DISH's lab in Atlanta this spring and summer.

DVB-SH is related to the DVB-H standard that has found support internationally for mobile TV.

Australia's Telstra considers IPTV, yet again

Australian operator Telstra has put out a call to IPTV vendors for the third time, as it seeks the technology to enable a fixed and mobile TV solution for its subscribers. The move comes as speculation rises that the operator will bail on its participation in the upcoming Channel B spectrum auction in the country. Telstra first announced IPTV intentions under Ziggy Switkowski and then again as CEO Sol Trujillo took over. The Trujillo plan included a now defunct initiative to build a $4 billion residential high-speed network that would carry IPTV services.

For more on Telstra's latest plans:
- see this article from Australian IT

Exterity launches corporate IPTV at Reuters HQ

AV network specialist Exterity launched an IPTV system that delivers 60 digital and terrestrial channels to more than 250 displays and an estimated 2,500 desktops and Reuters' headquarters in London. The system replaces a coaxial system that the company found dated, slow to deploy and expensive. The news agency said the IPTV setup will help its personnel stay abreast of national, international and internal news feeds. Exterity's plug-and-play broadcast TV to IP network distribution products, called "TVgateways," support the service. The gateways can handle up to six DVB-T or DVB-S feeds and can stream the program contents of up to six broadcast TV multiplexes over a building network. Exterity claims the corporate IPTV deployment is the largest in the U.K.

Denmark's largest telecom and cable provider, TDC, has inked a deal with Alcatel for an IPTV offering. The solution includes Microsoft TV IPTV Edition software and Alcatel's service integration know-how. The carrier plans to run the solution over ADSL while utilizing cable backend systems in their DVB based system for some apps. The Microsoft solution in its current generation offers instant channel change, personal video recording (one-touch recording and pausing live TV) and VOD. The deal puts Alcatel's worldwide triple play deals at more than 30.
